Nez sec, gorge sèche - Que faire ?

Dry nose, dry throat - What to do?

There are different causes of a dry nose and mouth:

  • The first cause is a poor seal of the mask. The mask must be properly adjusted using its harness; for example, you may need to make it tighter. It is also possible that your mask is too worn. The cushion typically lasts 3 to 6 months, and the mask harness may also be too worn. The cushion, primarily made of silicone or memory foam, softens over time and loses its firmness. Mask leaks increase the airflow from your device, making it difficult for the humidifier to transport sufficient water molecules to the mask. This results in greater water consumption and may cause the water tank to empty in less than a night.
  • If your mask is properly sealed, you should check to ensure that the hose is not the source of the leak. In particular, examine the hose for any perforations and ensure a good connection. Note that the water tank has a seal that can also cause an air leak.
  • If everything is well sealed, you can increase the humidity level of your device and the temperature of the heating hose. The higher the temperature of the hose, the more effectively the air will carry water molecules to the mask.
  • Some medications can cause a dry nose and mouth, so it’s advisable to talk to your pharmacist.

Nasal congestion or sinusitis

Nasal congestion or sinusitis may also result from the various causes mentioned above. These conditions are often characterized by pressure or frontal pain. Typically, these problems can be resolved by ensuring a good seal of the mask and proper humidification. Your device is designed to deliver more than 85% relative humidity to your mask.

What should I do if there is water condensation in my mask or hose?

There are two reasons this can occur:

  1. The room temperature is too cold (< 20 degrees Celsius).
  2. The humidity level of the device is too high.

It’s a balance between a cold room and the humidifier setting of your device. If you lower the humidity level of your device too much, you may experience the difficulties we just mentioned. If there is water condensation in your hose, it may not be heating enough.
